In the Indian medical system the qualifications are somewhat different to those in the USA and some other parts of the World.

The basic medical degree is MBBS ( Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery)- a course lasting 5.5 years followed by specialization in medical fields acquiring the degree of MD ( Doctor of Medicine) in the particular field and MS ( Master of Surgery) in surgical fields. The MD corresponds to the Attending in the USA and is addressed as a Consultant in India.
